Signal Hill in Calgary was initially part of the military reserve set aside for the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Calgary. Its name likely originated from its location for signaling and communication during the early military presence in the region.
Over the years, as Calgary grew and developed, the military reserve lands were repurposed, and the Signal Hill area became a residential community. The name serves as a nod to the site's earlier use for signaling and communication within the military context.
Batallion Park, previously known as Camp Sarcee in 1915, is located on the side of Signal Hill. It was the exclusive area in Alberta to provide training to the soldiers who were to be assigned to fight during the First World War.
Each unit established its identity by using stones that were hauled in sacks from the river by soldiers as part of their training program over a distance of 2 kilometers during off-duty hours.
Members of the 137 Battalion fought for years to maintain the rocks and have them declared a historic site. The stones were carefully stored and saved by Stewart Green Properties Ltd.
Signal Hill contains four geoglyphs spelling out the numbers 137, 113, 151, and 51. The stones, totalling 16,000 in all, are arranged on the side of the hill and visible from various parts of the city.
